Electronic Audio Experiments - Sending Analog Delay

video upload by Sound Isles

"Sending - a digitally controlled analog delay (the long awaited sequel).

Introduction from the manual:
'Sending is an analog delay that melds the archaic voice of bucket brigade devices with a fully modern toolbox of digital control. It embraces the character and idiosyncrasies of the medium while delivering high quality sound and performance-friendly features worthy of the modern musician. Using two MN3005 BBDs and comprehensive analog processing techniques, Sending can delay a sound up to a full second without clock noise, and it can be pushed to even longer times for compelling sonic degradation. At the input is a discrete preamplifier capable of subtle enhancement or warm saturation that melds perfectly with the delay line. A dual-mode feedback filter can be used to shape the repeats for deep pulses or dub-style bright echoes. Its flexible LFO engine can modulate the delay time to create gentle movement or musical chaos. Conducting this analog ensemble is a 32-bit, 100MHz processor granting deep user control, preset functionality, and MIDI access to every parameter. Sending is our love letter to the antiquated yet enduring technology of analog delay.'

I'm back with a new demo using 'mostly' synths to demonstrate the new Sending by EAE. Gear used: Arturia Minifreak, Roland R70, Polyend Tracker, Gretsch Guitar, EAE - Halberd, Model Fet, Death By Audio - Disturbance, GFI System - Specular Tempus, Eurorack.

Expert Sleepers - Persephone VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier)

video upload by Sound Isles

"The Persephone is a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) using a discrete JFET as the gain element. The JFET can be used for saturation/distortion and overdriven effects. Persephone also includes an incredible zero-crossing detector, which can be used to restrict gain changes to zeros in the audio waveform, preventing clicks and pops that can occur with fast envelopes. The module's signal and CV paths are 100% analogue and is a perfect addition to the Expert Sleepers line-up."

JFET VCA | Expert Sleepers - Persephone

video upload by DANIELE

"Persephone is the new VCA module by Expert Sleepers but it's much more than a simple VCA! It uses a JFET as the gain element that can generate amazing overdrive and distortion sounds! Furthermore, it includes a zero-crossing detector and an asymmetry switch. In this video I go through all these different features of Persephone."

"'Persephone' is a VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier) using a discrete JFET as the gain element. The JFET can be tastefully (or violently) overdriven for saturation/distortion effects.

Persephone also includes a zero-crossing detector, which can be used to restrict gain changes to zeros in the audio waveform, preventing clicks and pops that can occur with very fast envelopes, especially on lower pitched sounds. In fact, with the zero-crossing circuit engaged, you can use a simple gate as the CV input without clicks.

The module's signal and CV paths are 100% analogue (there is a little discrete logic involved in the zero-cross circuitry)."

Rainger FX - Snare Trap Drum Machine with Pedals and Synths

video upload by Sound Isles

"From the creator of wild musical devices Rainger FX, comes a wild and interactive drum machine that you play through, with, and for. Play beats manually, customize rhythm and sounds, sync it to other devices, trigger individual drums with controllers and modular synth gates. The Snare Trap inspires new rhythmic ideas and brings the jams. Here I explore its sounds and connectivity while destroying it with fuzz pedals, and distant modulated reverbs.

Thank you Rainger FX.

Other pedals featured:
Hypersleep - Electronic Audio Experiments
T-60 Analog Modulator - Demedash Effects
Patchulator 9000 - Boredbrain

"The Rainger FX Snare Trap is a powerful groove machine in a small form factor, perfect for quickly building rhythmic backing tracks in your pedal board or your desktop setup. Combining analog and digital synthesis techniques, the Snare Trap features a bass drum, snare drum, and hi-hat, with various timbral controls over each. The big rubber pad is multifunctional, and can be used for either tap tempo or triggering snare drum fills and bursts of noise. Dedicated effects including delay and a filter are easily accessible via the front panel, allowing you to adjust timbres in real time, while intuitive edit controls facilitate quick adjustments to your groove patterns on the fly.

If you want to connect the Snare Trap to other drum machines or clock sources, it offers analog trigger inputs for each of the three drum instruments. This little groove box can also send its own clock signal via the Sync Out port, bringing any other instruments that receive analog clock signals into step with the Snare Trap.

The Snare Trap completes the conversation with the rest of your setup by featuring an input port which allows you to bring in your own line level sources from guitars, synths, or other pedals in your chain, with adjustable Hi/Lo gain settings to accomodate your source. A dedicated mix knob controls the blend between the input signal and the groove, allowing you to dial in the perfect balance for your one-person band!

Demedash Effects T-60 Analog Modulator [Synth Demo]

video upload by Sound Isles

"A musical modulation machine. A non-talking synth demo exploring the features, controls and sounds of the T-60 Analog Modulator.

Using the Prophet 6, Arturia Microfreak and Roland Alpha Juno II to explore an innovative and fresh take on a classic analog BBD device with a pure analog signal path, and digital LFO."

Now available on Demedash Effects Reverb Shop

"Instantly overlay a worn-out layer of stretched tape to your playing. Let it wander. Let the years in the attic speak for themselves. Transcend time, playing directly through that decades-old tape. Get lost in the lush nostalgia. Crinkles, wear and instability add character.

The T-60 combines the gorgeous sound of a classic analog BBD device with the as-of-yet unseen possibilities granted by generating modulating waveforms via digital means.

A fully analog signal path means that your signal is never digitized - all effects are applied via analog means. Companding & careful filtering ensure that the noise floor is kept low without making the effect sound overly dark or muffled. Of course, Chorus, Vibrato & Flange are all available, but those are just the start of it.

The digital brain buried deep inside of the T-60 lets you do some truly wonderful things. 2 LFOs always run simultaneously - a standard one and a random one.

Random lets you blend the two together in any way you'd like. Fully random modulation is where you'll find that perfect tape warble.

Lag lets you control the delay time - the offset between dry and wet. Longer lag = wider modulation, shorter lag = more comb filtering.

Regen allows you to feed the wet signal back on itself, boosting resonant frequencies and giving rise to some great flanging at low lag times.

EQ rolls off bass when turned up, and rolls of treble when turned down. Hold down the 'Eng/Alt' footswitch and tap the 'Tap/Ramp' one to toggle the EQ. You can have it set to only apply to the wet signal, or to apply to wet and dry for much more dramatic effect.

Mix goes from fully dry to fully wet, for truly instant lofi.

Chop presents a whole new palette of options, allowing you to reduce the sampling rate of the standard lfo, or decrease the smoothness of the random lfo. There are a whole host of fun possibilities and rhythmic sounds in this one knob alone. See final 2 photos for more details.

You can of course tap in a tempo, and select between 4 different tap divisions.

Hold down the tap footswitch and you can ramp either Rate or Chop. You can control the ramp rate, and select between two ramping mode.

There is a lot packed in to this little box, and as much of it as possible is labelled on the pedal itself - so you won't need to try to remember secondary or tertiary functions."

optx by Boredbrain Music: Overview and Demo
video upload by Matt Lowery

Update: new videos added below.

"Come check out optx- a new ADAT Eurorack module that connects your modular synth to your computer.

In this video I give a brief overview of the module, and a few use cases for how I use it in my studio. I'm a huge fan of what Boredbrain has put together here, and can wholeheartedly recommend the module for those who like working with Eurorack in the DAW."

injectr by Boredbrain Music: Overview and Demo

"Injectr makes it super simple to bring guitar (or any other ¼ inch instrument) into your modular system for processing, and also to derive useful control voltage from your signal via its envelope follower and gate generator.

In this video, I give a brief overview of the module, and then demonstrate its incredible musical value. I really love this thing."

eqx5 by Boredbrain Music: Overview and Demo

"This is eqx5, by Boredbrain music. Eqx5 is a five band equalizer, offering 12 decibels of boost or cut per frequency band, at a slope of 6 db/oct. It features stereo input and output, a handy summing output, as well as control over the master volume level and stereo image.

Eqx5 offers cv control over parameter on the module, and allows the artist to push into deeply creative territory by sending control rate or audio rate modulation into some or all of its cv inputs."

Fairfield Circuitry ~900 (About Nine Hundred) Fuzz

video upload by Sound Isles

"~900 "About Nine Hundred" - a new four knob fuzz from Fairfield Circuitry made in Hull, Québec. Mostly using synth to demonstrate the two cascading JFET gain stages of the fuzz. The ~900 is a spiritual successor to the discontinued and well loved Four Eyes Fuzz, having a similar fuzz circuit. It has a very wide range of sounds from a lower gain drive to a massive wall of fuzz. Special appearance from their Long Life parametric EQ which pair together wonderfully. I explore how the fuzz can colour the Prophet 6 blending in nice distortion and break-up. The guitar is running direct-in to the GFI System Cabzeus cab sim with the Dr. Scientist Spectrum Analyzer running on the entire mix.

Hologram Electronics Microcosm: The Magic Sauce (Multi-Instrument Demo)

video by Sound Isles

"The Microcosm combines granular sampling, delay, and looping techniques to create gorgeous ambient accompaniment, transformation and immersion with its stereo reverb. Sounds are diffused into icy ambient textures, glitched sequences, pitched pads, and cinematic drones. Microloops can be locked into tight tap-tempo rhythms and synced to devices over MIDI. Save your effects settings, and recall your loops with user presets.

The secret is out. The Microcosm is an inspiring device that adds a magic sauce to whatever sounds you're cooking with. There is a lot of sonic exploration to be had and sound design potential with its well designed combination of features. The Microcosm is a multi-tool for musicians and explorers of all sounds.

Squarp Rample: a deep 4-Voice Sample Machine

Sound Isles

"A non-talking demo of the Squarp Rample: a 4-voice Eurorack sample player and effects processor with no duration limit. I explore the sample playback abilities, the included stock sounds + kits, and the several effects all through various sonic explorations.

Each voice supports up to 12 samples which can be stacked as multi-layered samples. Using all 4 voices you can have 48 samples in a single 'kit'. With up to 2600 possible kits on the SD there is a lot of sonic exploration to be had. The CV inputs provide a modulation destination for each voice and the gate inputs trigger the samples. A rack of 5 effects per voice (bitcrush, pitch shift, filter, freeze and drive).

Using Pamela's New! Workout to sequence and send modulation over CV, and FX Aid XL for some spacious reverb when needed. Arturia Microfreak makes an appearance. All modules are powered with the Polyend Anywhere via a portable battery.

All underwater footage was shot by me on a canoe trip.
Hope you enjoy the sights + sounds.

Thanks to Squarp instruments for sending me this module.

Tides by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith @kaitlynaurelia Featuring the Buchla Music Easel & Madrona Labs Aalto

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has a new album out titled Tides (currently on iTunes) composed entirely with a Buchla Music Easel and Madrona Labs' Aalto. The track Tides V above was composed solely with Aalto.

via Kaitlyn's website: "Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's formative years were spent communing with nature on Orcas Island in the northwest region of Washington state, a place she describes as "one of the most magical and peaceful places I have ever been." Though she wouldn't begin experimenting with modular synthesis until many years later, her creative work continues to be infused with and inspired by the vitality and serenity of Orcas.

Smith left the island to attend Berklee College of Music, where she studied composition and sound engineering, initially focusing on her voice as her primary instrument, before switching to classical guitar and piano. She employed many of the skills she refined in college in her indie-folk band Ever Isles, but a fateful encounter with a neighbor who lent her a Buchla 100 synthesizer, had a profound effect on her. Mesmerized by the Buchla’s potential, she explains "I got so distracted and enamored with the process of making sounds with it that I abandoned the next Ever Isles album." Starting with rhythmic patterns and melodic pulses, she soon began sculpting lush and exciting worlds of sound."
